Wood RemembersA nature and science pack for curious children and their grown-ups
You don't have to. If you feel able, a small donation to Action Oak helps make sure the oaks are still standing when the child this pack is for has children of their own.
In a quiet forest stood a tree with thick bark and wide branches. The animals called him Grandfather Oak. Every year, he added a new ring to his trunk. One year when it was too dry, the ring was thin. Another year, when the sun shone just right, the ring was wide. The tree remembered every season, storm and squirrel. It couldn’t speak, but in its rings were stories.
That is the story this pack opens with. Then you find the rings in a wooden toy or a log slice, read what they say about the years a tree lived through, and catch a tree breathing with a glass of warm water, a leaf and an hour under a bright lamp. Five A4 pages to print: the story, a page for grown-ups, two activity sheets and a Did You Know? page.
Designed for ages 4–9. The PDF comes to your inbox. Print at home on A4, in colour or black and white.
This is one of seven packs. The other six follow by email, one a week, each with its own story, a page for grown-ups, the science, an experiment that works and a Did You Know? page. You can stop them at any time.
