The Secret of the Stone FruitA scent, science and baking pack for curious children and their grown-ups
You don't have to. If you feel able, a small donation to Action Oak helps make sure the oaks are still standing when the child this pack is for has children of their own.
Long ago in the Kingdom of Stone Fruits, the royal family hid their powers inside each fruit stone. But only a real scientist-explorer could unlock the scent magic inside. Today, that explorer is you.
Your mission is to find out where the smell of almonds really comes from. You crack open a fruit stone, follow your nose and draw a smell map, meet the chemistry of the kernel, bottle an almond-scented potion, and then, on another day, bake Cherry Bakewell flapjacks and taste the science you smelled. Seven A4 pages to print, in two sessions.
Best for ages 6 and up, younger with help; read the grown-ups’ page first, it has the safety notes. The PDF comes to your inbox. Print at home on A4, in colour or black and white.
This is one of seven packs. The other six follow by email, one a week, each with its own story, a page for grown-ups, the science, an experiment that works and a Did You Know? page. You can stop them at any time.
