The Mushroom NeighbourhoodA woodland science pack for curious children and their grown-ups
You don't have to. If you feel able, a small donation to Action Oak helps make sure the oaks are still standing when the child this pack is for has children of their own.
Under the roots of a very old oak there is a village no one has ever seen. Its streets are threads finer than a hair, running through the soil in every direction. When the autumn rain comes, the village sends up its houses: round caps on tall stalks, with rows of gills like little doors underneath. The oak and the village are old friends. Next time you see a mushroom, remember: you’re only seeing the roof.
That is the story this pack opens with. Then you make a spore print overnight from a shop mushroom, draw the neighbourhood under the ground, and go out as mushroom detectives to look, never pick. Six A4 pages to print: the story, a page for grown-ups, the hidden village, two activity sheets and a Did You Know? page.
Designed for ages 3–8. The PDF comes to your inbox. Print at home on A4, in colour or black and white.
This is one of seven packs. The other six follow by email, one a week, each with its own story, a page for grown-ups, the science, an experiment that works and a Did You Know? page. You can stop them at any time.
