The Power in My VeinsA leaf and water science pack for curious children and their grown-ups
You don't have to. If you feel able, a small donation to Action Oak helps make sure the oaks are still standing when the child this pack is for has children of their own.
One April morning, a tiny leaf unfolded at the tip of an oak branch. It was soft and pale, and it had one job: to cook. All summer it caught the sunlight and drank in the air. Water climbed up to it from the roots, all the way through the trunk. The leaf turned the light, the air and the water into sugar, and sent it back down its veins to help the oak grow one more ring. In autumn, its work done, the leaf turned gold and let go.
That is the story this pack opens with. Then you stand a stick of celery in coloured water and watch the colour climb, trace the roads inside a leaf, and make rubbings of the leaves you find on the ground. Six A4 pages to print: the story, a page for grown-ups, the science, two activity sheets and a Did You Know? page.
Designed for ages 3–8. The PDF comes to your inbox. Print at home on A4, in colour or black and white.
This is one of seven packs. The other six follow by email, one a week, each with its own story, a page for grown-ups, the science, an experiment that works and a Did You Know? page. You can stop them at any time.
