A Complete Foundation for Letters and Numbers
Specifications
This bundle pairs our Uppercase Alphabet Puzzle (A–Z) with the Extended Wooden Number Puzzle (1–20) and an Oak & Sprout Playmat — everything a child needs to begin exploring letters and numbers through hands-on, Montessori-inspired play. Roll out the mat, set down a puzzle, and let them discover at their own pace.
Each puzzle is crafted from a rotating palette of exotic hardwoods — Tigerwood, Walnut, Zebrano, Purpleheart, Mahogany, and more — set into a solid beech base. The colours are entirely natural: no stains, no paints, just the real grain of the wood. Every piece is finished with Osmo Wood Wax Finish, made for little hands and built to last for generations.
Together, the two puzzles cover the essentials of early literacy and numeracy: letter recognition, phonics readiness, counting, sequencing, and the fine-motor control that underpins writing. The Playmat ties it all together, giving your child a defined, comfortable space to focus and play. Designed in Wiltshire for ages 2 and up — and backed by our Multiple Lifetime Guarantee.
Crafted by Nature, Perfected by Hand
The Story Behind Our Woods
At Oak & Sprout, we believe every toy should have a story. That’s why we choose woods that don’t just look beautiful, but have their own natural character. For example, our vibrant Purpleheart isn’t just a colour— we had to switch to diamond-tipped blades to be able to shape one of the world’s densest woods.
Naturally Colourful, Wonderfully Unique
We never use artificial dyes. Instead, we let woods like Padauk and Purpleheart reveal their own rich hues over time. Each piece is a little bit of nature’s own artwork, making every toy one-of-a-kind.
Built to Inspire and Challenge
Toys like our Shelly Slow puzzle are crafted to be engaging again and again. We design them so that each assembly is a fresh adventure, encouraging little ones to think, explore, and build resilience—all while playing.
Want to know more?
Tactile letter and number recognition
Children connect the shape of each letter and digit to its meaning through touch, not screens.
Fine-motor development
Lifting and placing chunky hardwood pieces builds the pincer grip and coordination needed for writing.
Self-correcting, independent play
Every piece fits only its matching pocket, so children spot their own mistakes and learn without pressure.
A dedicated learning space
The Playmat defines a calm, focused area for puzzles, tracing, and open-ended exploration.
Heirloom quality, naturally beautiful
Every piece is cut from sustainably sourced exotic hardwoods — Tigerwood, Walnut, Zebrano, Purpleheart, Mahogany — with colours that come from the grain, not a paint pot.
Everyday care. Wipe with a damp cloth and let the wood dry naturally. Please don’t soak it or put it in the dishwasher.
Where to keep it. Away from radiators and direct sun. Wood moves a little as the air grows drier or damper through the year, which is quite natural.
Refreshing the finish. When the wood begins to look dry, rub in one thin coat of Osmo Wood Wax Finish Extra Thin (1101), the finish we use ourselves, and let it dry fully before play. Once dry, it is food-safe. For babies who mouth their toys, ideally wait two weeks. Or let us make it easy: our Toy Care Kit has everything you need.
Our guarantee. Every toy is covered by our Multiple Lifetime Guarantee, and caring for it yourself never affects it.

A Learning Journey, Not Just a Toy
Our learning boards are sequenced to follow your child’s natural development. Start with the Geo Nest for shapes and spatial awareness from age 1. Move to numbers and lowercase letters at age 2-3. Progress to uppercase, extended numbers, and tracing by age 4-5.
Each board builds on the skills of the last. The chunky pieces of the Geo Nest develop the grip strength needed for the smaller letter pieces. The number puzzle’s 0-9 lays the foundation for the extended 1-20 board. It’s a curriculum in wood — designed to grow with your child.
Why Hands-On Learning Matters
In the Montessori method, children learn through touch, manipulation, and self-correction. Our learning boards are designed around this principle: each piece has a single correct position, so children know immediately when they’ve got it right — without being told.
The contrasting exotic hardwoods aren’t just beautiful - they provide a visual and tactile cue that helps children distinguish between pieces. A purpleheart "A" feels different from a padauk "B". Learning happens through the hands before the mind catches up.
Five Exotic Hardwoods
Every piece is cut from exotic hardwood — chosen for its natural colour, grain, and feel. No dyes, no stains. Every colour you see is the real wood.
