The Allen Keys Aren't Just for Assembly
Every Oak & Sprout vehicle arrives fully assembled — but that's just the beginning. With the included Allen keys, children can disassemble, explore, and rebuild. It's STEM learning disguised as play: threading, turning, problem-solving, and the pride of putting it all back together.

Montessori Wooden Excavator (Ages 1+)
Built like a real tool, not a throwaway toy. This excavator is carved from three characterful hardwoods—creamy maple for strength, deep walnut for warmth, and naturally red padauk for a joyful pop of colour. No paint, no plastic: what you see is the true grain and hue of the wood, finished with natural oils and waxes that invite little hands to touch, turn and explore.
The boom pivots and the bucket really scoops, so children feel how machines work rather than just watch them. And because an Allen key is included, the excavator becomes “work” in the Montessori sense: purposeful assembly and maintenance. Tighten, loosen, rebuild—again and again—until the movements become calm, precise and confident.
Why it matters in a Montessori home
• Real tools, real feedback: assembling with the Allen key strengthens pincer grip, wrist rotation, hand strength and bilateral coordination.
• Cause and effect made tangible: moving joints and a working bucket translate curiosity into problem-solving and sequencing (“what turns first?”, “how does this lift?”).
• Concentration through meaningful work: children take ownership of a beautiful, functional object—and care for it over time.
• Open-ended play that grows with them: dig in a sensory tray, load blocks, build roads; the play pattern evolves without beeps or batteries.
Materials and craft
• Solid maple, padauk and walnut; natural colour, no dyes or plywood.
• Steel fasteners you can service with the included Allen key (heirloom-tough, not glued shut).
• Finished with Osmo Wood Wax Finish (food-safe once dry, EN 71-3, saliva-resistant); edges rounded for small hands.
• CE & UKCA tested for ages 1+; hand-finished in the UK.
Each piece is unique; grain, tone and hue vary and are just as individual as the trees they came from. Pair it with blocks or a sensory tray for rich, hands-on STEM and practical-life play.
Crafted by Nature, Perfected by Hand
The Story Behind Our Woods
At Oak & Sprout, we believe every toy should have a story. That’s why we choose woods that don’t just look beautiful, but have their own natural character. For example, our vibrant Purpleheart isn’t just a colour— we had to switch to diamond-tipped blades to be able to shape one of the world’s densest woods.
Naturally Colourful, Wonderfully Unique
We never use artificial dyes. Instead, we let woods like Padauk and Purpleheart reveal their own rich hues over time. Each piece is a little bit of nature’s own artwork, making every toy one-of-a-kind.
Built to Inspire and Challenge
Toys like our Shelly Slow puzzle are crafted to be engaging again and again. We design them so that each assembly is a fresh adventure, encouraging little ones to think, explore, and build resilience—all while playing.

Heirloom quality
Made from solid hardwoods to be cherished and passed down.
Everyday care. Wipe with a damp cloth and let the wood dry naturally. Please don’t soak it or put it in the dishwasher.
Where to keep it. Away from radiators and direct sun. Wood moves a little as the air grows drier or damper through the year, which is quite natural.
Refreshing the finish. When the wood begins to look dry, rub in one thin coat of Osmo Wood Wax Finish Extra Thin (1101), the finish we use ourselves, and let it dry fully before play. Once dry, it is food-safe. For babies who mouth their toys, ideally wait two weeks. Or let us make it easy: our Toy Care Kit has everything you need.
Our guarantee. Every toy is covered by our Multiple Lifetime Guarantee, and caring for it yourself never affects it.

The Engineering Approach
Why Real Tools Make Real Difference
Most toys do the work for children. Lights flash, sounds play, buttons get pressed. Our vehicles do the opposite — they arrive fully assembled, then invite children to take them apart. The included Allen keys are sized for small hands, and every bolt has a purpose. Children tighten, loosen, remove, reassemble. They learn that things are made of parts, and that parts can be understood.
This is practical life in the Montessori sense: real tools, real outcomes, real satisfaction. A child who has dismantled and rebuilt an aeroplane knows something a child who has only played with one does not. The vehicles are the lesson.
Crafted with Purpose
The Materials
We use naturally colourful exotic hardwoods because children deserve better than paint and plastic. Every piece is sanded smooth and finished with Osmo Wood Wax Finish, made from plant oils and natural waxes. The colours you see are the wood itself - no stains, no dyes, no shortcuts.
Padauk
Vibrant coral-red that mellows to a warm brown. Naturally resistant to wear.
Walnut
Deep chocolate brown with fine grain. A classic hardwood prized for centuries.
Maple
Pale, clean-grained and smooth to the touch. A perfect contrast to the deeper tones around it.
